The PREPARE project hosts its first roundtable event in collaboration with EU-funded Health projects
On June 11, 2024, the coordinators of PREPARE, Aristotle University, hosted a pivotal roundtable event in Thessaloniki, Greece. Bringing together EU-funded initiatives focused on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance healthcare, this gathering was a milestone for PREPARE, which is dedicated to developing personalised prediction tools to aid healthcare professionals and patients in choosing the most effective therapy strategies.
The event was held in collaboration with eight other projects: Microb-AI-ome, SPIDeRR, STRATA-FIT, STRATIF-AI, TARGET, AI4Lungs, CoMPaSS-NMD, and COMFORT. Each of these projects is working on AI-powered tools designed to categorise patients based on disease risk or treatment response. This categorisation aims to support healthcare providers in tailoring treatments to individual needs, thereby significantly improving patient care quality.
Given that the EU AI Act categorises AI systems in healthcare as high-risk, it is crucial for these projects to adhere to the latest AI regulations and ethical standards. The roundtable served as an excellent platform to exchange knowledge, discuss common challenges, and establish best practices within the AI health sector. This collaboration is vital for accelerating scientific progress and innovation in the field.
Key Discussion Points from the Roundtable
1. Data Interoperability and Common Data Models: One of the primary challenges highlighted was the need for standardisation to convert vast amounts of raw healthcare data into useful formats. This standardisation is essential for improving patient care, optimising operations, and complying with regulatory guidelines.
2. Federated Learning Approaches: The roundtable also addressed the issue of data sharing and security. Federated learning was proposed as a solution to these challenges. This approach allows the integration of diverse clinical datasets without sharing sensitive patient information, fostering innovation and evidence-based practices in rehabilitation care.
3. Explainable AI Tools: A significant concern in the use of AI in healthcare is the lack of transparency and interpretability, which can undermine trust and hinder widespread adoption. The discussion underscored the importance of developing explainable AI tools to increase trust and facilitate broader acceptance of AI systems.
4. Medical Device Registration (MDR) Certification: The roundtable also tackled the complexities of MDR certification for AI tools. As AI applications and prediction models in healthcare continue to evolve, navigating the MDR requirements and certification processes remains a major challenge. The ongoing development of MDR legislation highlights the need for clear guidelines and procedures to ensure the acceptance of these tools.
Looking Ahead
The roundtable event was more than just a discussion; it marked the beginning of several collaborative efforts among the participating projects. Follow-up activities are already in progress, including joint dissemination efforts such as policy briefs and newsletters, as well as exchanges of research experiences. There are also plans to submit joint proposals, further solidifying the collaborative spirit fostered during the event.
In summary, the PREPARE roundtable provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing AI in healthcare. By addressing issues like data interoperability, federated learning, explainable AI, and MDR certification, the participating projects are collectively paving the way for more effective and ethical AI applications in healthcare, ultimately aiming to enhance patient outcomes and advance rehabilitation practices.
